I put a freeze plug heater in my '83 Scooter. Kind of a pain since you have to remove the exhaust manifold to do it, which of course means a new manifold gasket, and the possibility of any of the studs snapping. Mine has worked really well. I've had it in place for about 3 years, and no problems at all. I'm actually partial to the freeze plug type heater; they use less electricity than a tank style, and they are pretty much free from leak issues if installed right, since there are no hoses involved.
