When I got this car, the "exhaust system" was a cobbled together mess. I replaced it with a Walker exhaust system. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the system right now, if there is any interest, I'll take some. The Walker system part numbers are:

Resonator:                  WAL 22244
Intermediate pipe:        WAL 43833
Muffler:                       WAL 17000
Tail pipe:                     WAL 44684

.... and a couple of rubber band type "hangers" to hold the thing up. Now you might be thinking that you can do away with the resonator, but keep this in mind...the head pipe ( which is no longer available ) has a unique flange on it. It also bolts on with "spring bolts" because of the inherent Diesel vibration. A good muffler shop could undoubtably fabricate something, but for $40, I decided to install it. Besides, I like silence. This resonator is huge, bigger than the muffler actually. Now, here's the good part. The intermediate pipe between the resonator and muffler doesn't fit !  I had to remove about 7 inches so it would fit. Fortunately there was a straight section which allowed me to use an over and over fitting and clamp it all back together. Ugly, but under the car.

Also, there is some kind of goofy "doughnut" gasket between the head pipe and resonator. I need to find one of these, as mine is worn, and leaking. I hate exhaust leaks. Even after installing all of this, this car is far from quiet !

Update

I did a favor for one of my customers who owns a muffler shop, and he agreed to tackle my exhaust "leak". . We found a crack in the head pipe, near the flange where the resonator bolts on, which was making a lot more noise than I realized. It was hard to tell if the "noise" was normal "diesel noise", or an exhaust leak. ( I hate exhaust leaks, and normally I can be very sure ! ) Once the crack was welded up ( like I said previously, this pipe is no longer available, or I would have replaced it ), and the "doughnut" gasket replaced, the car became astonishingly "quiet". Of course the clatter of the Diesel engine is your constant companion, but now the exhaust is silent. Which I vastly prefer. I want a car to be silent. Helps to not attract certain attention if you drive a certain way.  :-)
