Description

It is commonly stated that the Chevette engine is an Isuzu. Some sources say the 1.4L is a G140 and 1.6L is a G161z. While the Diesel engine used in North American Chevettes are from Isuzu, the gasoline engines are not.
According to engineers from GM Brazil who worked on the project: The Chevette engine was designed by Opel for Project 909 (The development name of the T-Body). Those engineers say they resolved some of the issues Opel were having.

The resulting engine was only used in North and South America. There are two main families. The one from Brazil for South America came first. The North American version came later with several changes. These include the addition of emissions control equipment.
