I'm running ~700w and have no dimming lights at idle even with the heater blower on high.
After seeing my results with the stock (63amp) alt I'm now a big advocate of whats called the 'Big 3 upgrade'
For the Big3 you put new larger sized wires from the battery to ground, battery to engine, and alternator positive to the battery. I kinda needed to replace some of those wires on my car as it was but ended up using a mix of 2 and 4 guage to get the upgrade done. 2gauge is actually overkill for our little alternators though.
As for a adding a second alternator... You can have two without any special added circuits. But ONLY if you have two identical units. If they are rated different or test out as different one can kill the other pretty quick.
I investigated getting a bigger alt before. I found you can likely get a 105amp alt that would bolt right on. It came on blazers and several other cars. Pretty much any 10SI and 12SI alt will fit if the mounting ears and clocking is right since the case is the same size on all of them. You might need a different shaped plug to plug into the alt though...
Just for the heck of it... here is the thread where I did my stereo build. No pics of the wiring upgrade though.
