I think a 15inch touchscreen is a bit huge. All the extra work involved will be insane. With relocating the heater controls and such...
I've thought a good deal about doing a 7inch myself. If I ever do I think I'd relocate the center vents in the dash and put it there. Maybe find a dash in a junkyard that has vents on each side of the radio or heater controls and use it as a base for relocating the vents and putting in the screen. I think I'd extend the 'visor' from over the gauge cluster down the dash to cover the screen and vents as well.
It would put the whole screen well within reach. It would be a bit more of a stretch to reach it all if you just create a double din opening where the stock radio position is.
So Lou, Is your car a 2door or a 4door? Where are you planning to put the PC itself? Windows, Linux, or Mac? Are you a member over at MP3car.com? Going to have GPS and all the other fun stuff?
If you have a 2door let me recommend a couple places to look for putting the PC that is out of the way. First is where I put the sub box in mine... There is a large dead space on each end of the back seat. Another would be UNDER the BACK seat. Pull out the lower cushon and take a look. There is a good bit of useable space under there. Its where I'd probibly consider putting my CPU if I did this. A 4door might have a similar useable space under the rear seat.
I wish you tons of luck and look forward to hearing about your progess as it goes along.
I was going to link you off to my stereo build thread. But I see you already found it.
