1976-1980 used a 13 digit VIN. In 1981, GM changed all of the
VINs to a 17 digit VIN.
To clear up confusion about the VIN denotation on 2/4dr:
08 is sedan 2 door hatchback.
68 is sedan 4 door hatchback.
except for 1987, these are the VIN denotation on 2/4drs:
21 is sedan 2 door hatchback.
61 is sedan 4 door hatchback.

Chevettes were assembled in various plants. Most of them are in
the Eastern areas. List below.

That's all I have seen. I don't know about others.

Here's an 1987 typical VIN sequence: (These are real VIN that i
saw.)
2drs: 1G1TB21C0HA104756 Can be decoded as seen above. Only difference is 21
for 2drs body style.
4drs: 1G7TB61C5HA700975 The 3rd digit means: "7" = Pontiac division
and "61"
means 4drs sedan body style.

I want add some information not written about VIN chevette number
that you don't mention on your web page.
You mention that all 1980-87 chevette Vin mention 08 as 2door
body style and 68 for 4 dr body style but it's not true...
Our dear GM company changed it for 1987 models... 2 doors body
style for 1987 mention 21 in the VIN and 61 for 4 doors T-body.
My 1987 chevette as this VIN: 1G1TB21C0HA104756. She's the 4756th
chevrolet chevette made this year but she's the 4972th 1987
T-Body made and she was made on August 28th, 1986, received by a
local dealer(3 hours from here) on November 27th, 1986 and sold
on november 11th, 1987. I plan to meet the first owner someday; i
have his name on the waranty booklet of my car. I know alot of
things about my dear Chevette and that's a reason why i like her
so much :) I proud to be a Chevetter.
I found that T-1000 Vin order number begin at 200001 and Acadian
Vin order number begin at 700001. It's very interresting to
decode Chevette build sheets and Vin numbers. I would like doing
a web page on that but my computer is so slow, i'm not so hot to
do it.
