Ed Werick's
Chevette Roadster !
As further proof that Mr. Werick is a World Class Fabricator, take a look at his latest project ! First, a little explanation via an email that Ed sent me:
Hi Bob!
Not to blow your mind any further, I'd like to share with you my current project . Once I got done with the 86S I looked at the pile of parts that I had left over. It looked like almost enough to build another car. So that's what I'm doing. I have wanted to build a custom bodied roadster for many years but always found an excuse not to (usually lack of money) but now I have an opportunity to do it "on the cheap" My goal is to build as much of the car as possible using parts and materials that I have on hand. I will have to buy some stuff ( lights, battery, hoses, sheet metal ect) but I hope to keep the overall cost around $2000 or less. The suspension and drive train are from the 86 Chevette, the front and rear fenders are from a 55 Stude truck, the exhaust header ,Monza wheels and tires, fuel tank, steering column, master cyl and steering rack are from the 84 Scooter. The radiator shell is a wheelbarrow tub and the chassis is 2x3 steel tubing and 12ga sheet metal. All this may sound a little wierd- I'm documenting the project as I go, so I'm sending along some pics of what I've done so far. You can judge for your self. The sketch is a rough idea of what I expect the roadster to look like when it's done. One of the reasons I'm bringing this to your attention is I need a trans for the roadster.(remember the 86 trans was blown?) I'd like to put in a 5spd. I know that they were available from 81 to 84 in the diesel Chevettes and they are an Izusu trans. Do you happen to know if one will bolt up to the 1.6 eng? Do you happen to know where I can get one? Also can you think of any way I can put a side draft intake system on the engine? The carb happens to be the highest part of the engine and the hood is going to be so low on the roadster that the carb will stick through. If there's no way I'll put on a scoop but I'd rather not. I have thought about modifying the intake manifold and installing a throttle body injector from an 84 Fiero 2.5 4cyl that I have. This is going to entail installing the distributor, fuel pump, O2 sensor, computer and instruments from the Fiero as well. That's lots of work! I'd rather use a side draft carb. I plan to have the roadster on the road next summer(licensed as an 84 Chevette! Thats right, I'm using the VIN tag from the 84 Scooter too!) I plan to keep taking pics as I progress. I'll keep you up dated if you like. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Ed
I left Ed's question on this page to let people know what kind of idea's he's coming up with. Now, the pics:
Ed can even sketch !
There are some people that are very talented, and I think Ed is one of them ! I hope he starts contributing to the Chevette Performance Forum.
